Angus Maddison was a world scholar on quantitative macroeconomic
history, including the measurement and analysis of economic growth and
development. He was professor at the University of Groningen from 1978
to 1997, and a founder of the Groningen Growth and Development Center.
Professor Maddison compiled one of the most comprehensive global
datasets for Population, GDP, and per capita GDP, covering 180+
countries and regional groups and going back all the way to AD1. For further information on these statistics, see
http://www.ggdc.net/MADDISON/Historical_Statistics/BackgroundHistoricalStatistics_03-2010.pdf. The Maddison Project has launched an updated version of the original Maddison
dataset in January 2013. The update incorporates much of the latest research in the field, and presents new estimates of economic growth in the world
economic between AD 1 and 2010. The new estimates are presented and discussed in Bolt and Van Zanden (2013). The First Update of the Maddison
Project; Re-Estimating Growth Before 1820, Maddison Project Working Paper 4.
